If I am not mistaken the R8 uses a similar system to that of the 997 Carrera 4S, not the Turbo. Hope I'm correct.

Dear RXBG,

the quattro drivetrain used in the R8 differs a lot between the prior used systems. Outgoing from the gearbox the driveshaft leads through the dry oil sump system of the engine forwards to the front axle differential. With an axle load distribution of 44 to 56 percent the weight balance is excellent. The viscoclutch distributes up to 35 percent of the tractiveforce to the front axle.

:)The S4 has a straight 50:50 split. The default split on an R8 has far more rear bias (due to the weight distribution being more rear-biased thinking from a traction point of view) but it retains an ability to distribute more to the front wheels if the rear wheels lose grip. Overall, the R8 has less tendancy for understeer and more tendancy to oversteer.

If you are talking about torque split, the S4 with manual transmission is 40/60 while the Tiptronic is 50/50. This was effective model year 2006.

Not true. Its 50:50. The RS4 was the first with a 40/60 split.

Yes, the RS4 was the first, but the 2006 6-speed manual also got 40/60. Check the attached PDF document from Audi. Page 1 under "drivetrain."

And, here (http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z10609/default.aspx) is an article about the 2006 S4.

The last paragraph under drivetrain:

"New for 2006 is the introduction of the latest generation Torsen drivetrain on all S4 models equipped with a manual transmission. The new system has an asymmetrical torque split of 40/60 front/rear under normal driving conditions. This helps the S4 exhibit a more dynamic driving sensation. However, like all quattro-equipped cars, engine power can still be sent to the wheels with the most traction. Tiptronic-equipped S4 models retain a 50/50 torque split."

Well, I did not edit it. I downloaded it from Audi's web site. But, obviously you don't want to believe someone else and I don't have time to waste in proving to you anything.

I did a little googling on the subject and it appears that US spec S4's are listed as 40/60 while european ones are 50/50 - which is a bit hard to believe. Unless they updated it after introducing the 40/60 split in the RS4 without any major news coverage...

Anyway - there is no information regarding this matter on the audi.de site.

mori. over on AW there was a huge discussion about this issue for the longest time. in the US the 2006 MY (not the 05.5, wich was a B7 body style, also) manual S4's came with 40:60. they were first, ahead of the RS4, at least in the US.

how do i know? because it was i who put the matter to rest over there by calling AOA and having them write me a letter stating it so, using my VIN # as an example. i still have the letter and could rescan it to post it for you :)

viken is right. the firsr audi to come with 40:60 in the US, at least, was the 2006 MY S4 manual. i have one. and with ESP off it is tail-wagging fun on the autoX.

I might be wrong on this, but the 40/60 split for the S4 was introduced in the limited edition Quattro25 model and then was carried over there after to the normal S4. I was under the impression that the S4 in Europe also gain this system at that time.

As for the rest of the A4/6 range of quattros I haven't a clue.

Interesting, AOA made such a big thing about the 40/60 split at the time I thought that was surely the time the change was made.

Not sure when you got your car, but 25th Anniversary models started production in August 2005. First batch of cars arrived late October 2005. I thought all S4 sold before that were 2005.5 models.
