I like the idea of a rwd TT ala R4. The boxster never caught my eye but if they can combine Porsche handling with Audi design, they will have a winnar!

You will never get a rwd high performance Audi. It has been Audi policy to combine awd in to every design for the last 25 years, so if you are looking a rwd TT, I reckon you will have to look else where.

Sooner or later Audi will realize that lightweight and AWD donut mix and by all indications, that is what R4 is supposed to be. The RS4 was lambasted in a recent compared because it was too heavy and it fell behind the 335.

chiphead,

Lightweight and awd do mix, the problem is luxury and lightweight don't and alas we the public want both. Look at the RS4 vs the 335i the RS4 is only 50kgs more than the 335i which is actually the weight of the awd system over rwd and when you take in to consideration that more power equals more weight, the RS4 would quite possibly work out to be lighter if it had the same power. The S5 is only 30Kgs more and is a lot bigger than both of them, so I reckon if anything Audi know how to make lighter car than even BMW.

The R4 will have awd, that's a sure thing. The only difference will be the absence of luxuries that detract for the pure driving experience.

And by the way, only in one test was the 335i quicker, so I hardly would call that a success now.

Those car media people are so stupid.
The new R4 and Cayman/Boxter will be two totally different cars.
The Cayman/Boxer will have rwd and boxer engines, the R4 ( TT Mk3 ?) will be 4wd and will have 4 and 5 cylinder turbo FSI engines.
Only the basic construction will be the same.

Hans.

Actually in the Car Website they state exactly what Hans is saying so at least they are one of the magazines which are reporting the thing correctly.

Our sources indicate that Audi has earmarked the 300bhp turbocharged four-pot – as seen in the TT Clubsport Concept (above) – and the blown 350bhp 2.5-litre five-cylinder unit (currently being prepped for the hot SR version of the TT) for the R4. Although Porsche could adapt the new four-wheel drive system which is being developed for the 997 replacement – codenamed 991 – for the next Boxster/Cayman, it’s unlikely given the associated weight penalty of the drivetrain. But Audi will want to play its quattro trump card, so expect its engineers to heavily modify the 991’s all-paw layout for the R4.

Thanks for the clarification. Audi and quattro are synonymous and thats the last word I guess.
