Had a chance to study the details of the VW Phaeton in an exhibition earlier this week.

I must say the interior and material is second to none - simply top class! It's a masterpiece! Many of the details aren't even available on the A8...

Paddles are different from RS6, I guess you can see from the picture.

And the brakes...probably needed with the 420 hp W12.

Here's the new A8 4.2 to compare with.

Nice, but not as nice...

why, oh why, do Audi insist on putting wood into a supermodern luxury cruiser?

I wish they'd have the option of aluminium!

What can I say. Don't like the idea of that rainforest look in my car either...

Carbon fibre, steel or aluminium is a lot better.

It's a high tech vehicle, not a living room.

:D LOL......that's funny but I like wood (even though I selected carbon fiber for the beast).....problem are the choices. It's basically the same wood patterns from 20 years ago......needs updating.

Unusual wood in the Phaeton. Got any photos in walnut wood?

Forgive my ignorance, but what is that small pedal on the footrest? Trunk-release?

Paldi

That's the emergency brake! The release is on the lower left edge of the dash (you can see it in the pic - just above his shoe).

I think the Audi interior looks much better. The VW looks much more cluttered, at least with those colors.

Cluttered? Well, lets try gray then...

The Phaeton got the RS6+ pedals!!!
The shifting paddles are a big huge in my opinion. However, given the size of the car, they probably won't look so large in that interior.

... hmm .. the interior(wood) of the phaeton (if you look from the back of the car) it STRONGLY reminds me of the TREG!!!!!

I think it's a really great car .... but why A8 AND phaeton, ... in my mind it doesn't make sense, ... but ... just my opinion.

1. A lot of people are scared of all aluminum...
2. VW is loosing sales to MB and Lex and Audi - so hoping to get those going to MB and Lex without hurting Audi too much.
3. Head of VW wanted to do it - ego!
4. Why T-reg, when people can by the new A7 or Allroad?
5. Because they can.
6. Most Audi guys won't cross-shop to VW.
7. VW thought it would do better. Bigger wheels would help.

Uh, the dash, not the seats...

Gotcha. Color don't matter then. I like the dash guages though they are a little small, some of them. The Infotainment system puts some of the controlls on an MMIlike rotary switch but there are still a load of buttons. Audi is better but be careful not to spill anything on it. Audi's are having a lot of trouble with spills on the MMI.

The interior in the VW was a bit dark in the first pictures, and not having seen it in real life, it may have contributed to the cluttered impression I got. Especially since the picture quality wasn't that great. Anyway, why doesn't the VW have the MMI system? Not just bacause of spillage risk, surely?

Actually, they do. It's just called "Infotainment" and is a little less than the MMI. You can select a/c at a very detailed level, radio functions in great detail, ride setting in 4 modes, read the owner's manual on the screen and a lot of other stuff. I don't have one but there's a wealth of info about the car on VWvortesx on the Phaeton Forum. Check the table of contents thread which is a "sticky" at the top.

First thing I'll do is pry off the chrome bling Phaeton.

I like the Audi better than the VW. A lot of the options that VW had (such as wood steering wheel) are available on the Audi. I think the Audi does look less cluttered and more simple.I also feel that the meterials in the Audi are of a higher quality. And dont forget that the Audi is Aluminum and has a signifigant weight advantage!!!
