Michelin PS2's

I've personally tried the PS1 and PZeros. PZeros are better for me. However, the owners of RS6s that have tried PS2s all say they are the best hands down of any tire they've ever tried.

I've just put on a new set of PS2's, replacing Dunlops. I am very impressed with the ride and the lack of noise, which was a complaint I had of the Dunlops.

I've paid about 660 CHF a piece, that's about 405 EUR or 540 USD.

Dunlop SP9000's came with the car. They wore out quickly and got noisy when there was still a lot of tread left.

Michelin PS2's now on car. Better in EVERY way so far...

PS2's.... period. They are like butter... You didn't know your RS6 could be that quiet!

Be careful though if you order through your dealer. The PS2 is not in the books as a dealer approved RS6 tire, so they sometimes order the PS1's instead, and since the PS2's are not marked as PS2's, you have to look at the tread to tell the difference.

do you mean the ps2's aren't rated high enough, or are you referring to some other tire? If so, They are Y (zr) rated tires, and they are smooth and quiet all the way to 155mph. also, i am blown away by their wet performance, the push right through big puddles. night and day from the ps1.

anyone hear anything about the Falken Azenis RT-615's?

everyone i used to run with for autox used the old falkens and said they are best bang for buck. just dont expect to get more than 10k out of them.

dont know how they would hold up with such a heavy car though. right now...from all of you i will be ordering some ps2's.

not to mention that they are only $170 vs $290

265s will work fine but you'll need wider than OEM rims... 275 will be very tight and forget about 295s unless you get bespoke rims and are willing to bang out fenders... gets expensive... speaking of which, if you're serious about going that route, I have forged magnesium Champion Audi race wheels I can get you for a very reasonable price for what they are (Bespoke one offs made by BBS Motorsports, 18x9.5 and weigh an incredible 15lbs each!!!).

Hi ben, I've been reading on the forum and this thread (http://www.rs6.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6527)made me decide I'd go for the MTM bimoto's anyway.
I'd buy the wheels in 9.5J x 19.

Tires I have several options:

Pilot sport cups
P-zero
P-zero rosso
P-zero nero
P-zero assi.

The michelins have a load index of only 89 which is scary.

No worries, as for wheels, get what you like.

Stay the farfegnugen away from any tires that have a rating that low!!! That # would be extremely dangerous in a track environment. You'd be just asking for a blowout!

Jimmy here uses Pilot Cups in 265... I really didn't know the load rating was only 89. I'll double check...

Ben:addict:

**edit** ok, just checked tirerack, the 265/35 ZR18 have 93, the 265/30 ZR19 have the low 89 you're talking about. I believe Jimmy's are the 18"s.

What this equates to is this: static weight for the RS 6 dry is @4150 (zero fluids) and @4300lbs track ready. Now, considering the RS 6 has 60% of its mass at the front wheels, we are talking about 1290lbs on each front tire! Now, with a load rating of 89, that tire is only rated to carry 1279! So even parked the RS 6 is exceeding that value!!! Now imagine dive bombing a tight corner at 100mph+++ No way Jose! Even a load rating of 93 is only 1433 and would likely need to be closely monitored for tire issues (Jimmy watches his temps religiously while on the track). For what it's worth, the OEM tires all come with load ratings of 99 (1709lbs) each. Much safer.

It'll get dangerous for the front tires especially according to Steve... :vhmmm:
89 is only 580kg...

I think best solution would be P-zero neros in 275/30 R19 with load rating 96, together with the bimoto wheels in 9.5J x 19

I already have PS2's on the stock wheels so it would allow me to make a good comparison..

Did you have any chance weighing the wheel?

Does anyone else have the PS2's mounted on standard RS6 wheels?

I've bought a set in 255/35 ZR 19 , it fits but only very very tight. See pictures.
It's less than 1/10th of a mm they took away. Guess next time I'd better look for an ET 30.

Guys - there are actually two different versions of the PS2 in 255/35/19ZR - one is rated as "extra load" and has a rating of 96. Make sure you get these - Damon at the TIRE Rack helped me figure this out.

Jup, at that time I was on standard 19" RS6 rims.

The tires are indeed ZR.

But some have posted here that there is a different version in PS2 for the RS6. Anyway, I'm now on bimoto's with sportcontact 3. Not as grippy as the PS2 in the dry, but still a very good allrounder.

Question: Will a 255/40/ZR18 95W be dangerous on an RS6 w/stock 18" wheels? I know the load rating should be 99W. Keep in mind, I am not driving the Autobahn, and only occassionally would see any speed over 135mph.

I ask b/c I am seriously considering the BFG G-Force T/A KDW 2 tire:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=g-Force%20T/A%20KDW%202&partnum=54YR8GFTAKDW2

I know everyone here loves the PS2's. But I don't want to spend that kind of money (58% more expensive than these).

Thanks!!

Its not the top speed that you need to be concerned about. Its the accumulative wear on the sidewalls that are flexed beyond their design over a period of time, and this overstressing can cause the sidewalls to heat up and blow out especially with the underinflaiton so many seem to have. Thats why the XL. Its a load rating, not a speed rating. With the heavy weight of these cars, its worth the extra cost compared to what you might have to pay for the aftermath of a blowout..

I think it has less to do about speed than it does cornering forces and load transfer. Since you are looking at Tire Rack give Luke a call or email below as he works there and can answer your questions...he is very involved with the Audi club in Chicago (sponsor)and can certainly help you find the best solution and has helped several of us whale owners.

i really like these new goodyear eagle f-1 that i just put on.i had toyos and i felt that they were a little stiff.i had these tires on booth of my a-8 cars.i do more casual driving than racing.i dont race my car cause i have my two kids with me most of the time but every chance i get to dust some little rice burner or a vette i surely take complete advantage of the situation.the goodyear is a very quiet tire and a much more softer tire as well.i think i drive pretty hard and put a lot of miles on my car.the f-1 tires after 22,000 miles were around 80% tread left and still performing to my satisfaction.

I'm a little concerned that the sidewalls may be flexy. Otherwise, they sound good for the price and have the 99 load rating (which is the only reason I'm not buying BFG G-Force KDW2's which only have a 95 load rating).

I'd love to hear your opinion if you have any first hand experience with Nitto Invo's! Thanks

Having purchased my 2004 RS6 last year, with only 22000kms, I was concerned that the car had a sporadic jerk under acceleration. The dealers checked it out saying there was no problem. At 33000kms the car developed a problem on start-up. It would rev to 3000rpm and then slowly decrease to idling revs. On driving it hunted between gears.
The dealer replaced one air mass meter and it was fine until the problem came back two weeks ago. The dealer replaced both meters......what a difference!!! I wonder if anyone else has had the same experience?

Removed my P-zeros yesterday and replaced with PS2's..

P-zeros only had 3/32 remaining and were very noisy..

What a difference with the PS2's.. I'm sold

Paid 316 per tire plus a few bucks for mounting and
balancing.

Audi wanted about 350 per tire but figured your safe
gettting tires at somewhere besides the dealer.

New to the board, a lot of great posts here.

Proud owner for 3 weeks now.. yahoo......

Purchased my 03 RS6 in Saly Lake City. Saved myself
about 7K from the few that are for sale here in California..

42,500 miles when purchased which was pretty good considering you can't stop driving this car..

Changes the winshield ASAP at the dealer. Had 2 chips that were not properly delat with. Reesin everywhere.. grrr..

Did a medium smoke tint all around except for the front of course.. They did a killer job on that....

Overall condition of the car is good considering it's got 4+ years in
service.

Installing Sirius Satellite next week at the dealer. Also changing the shifter plate which the previous "fleet lease" owner scratched up.. Good thing I was able to obtain another shifter plate from a Audi delaer in Florida..

Cheers.......

Thanks for the invite.. Just might have to take that drive..

Spent a week in Hunington Beach last August. Had a blast..

The drive here from Salt lake City was awesome.

Hit 150 in the Nevada desert and my boy was crying for more..

Had an 04 S4 that I got rid of last year. The RS6 is essentially in
league of it's own..

I miss the stick, could only imagine a 6sp in this beast..

Back to the dealer next week to have them check on my clunking
noise coming from the passenger rear. Fear the DRC may be going..

What's the best way to approach them? You suppose they play
kind of stupid on these issues and just blow them off saying everything
looks fine..

Well, I'm armed with some seriously good info as a results of this
incredible forum..

Can't wait to get my sirius installed. Have satellite in 2 other cars
and I'm sold..

Having a new shifter plate installed as well. Previous owner did a good
job of scratching the shiet out of this one.. Arm and a leg for it, but
this car only deserves the best..

Crispix - don't play dumb, go in with all the facts and make sure that if indeed it _is_ a DRC issue that they don't cheap out and just replace the "broken" one. After all, if one goes, odds are, you'll be back soon for at least another repair.

crispix
March 7th, 2008, 16:26
Actually I wasn't palnning on playing dumb.. Was more worried
maybe they would play dumb.. I'm curious how much they really
want to address these DRC issues.. Seems with the percentage
of failures, they would have dealt with this properly..

Will explain the noise which sounds like a clunking or banging similar
to what it sounds like when you don't have a door shut all the way.

Went though the entire trunk area to assure all was okay and it was..

Don't hear it much at high speeds and on smooth roads. Lower speeds
and rough roads are a different story..

Will have them check the suspension arm, steering frame components, and
all shocks for any evidence of leakage.

Assuming there is some sort of leakage, can they pressure check at make
sure it's between 12 and 16 bar. Audi's spect is ~15 right?

Had a good mountain run this week.. I'm not getting any adverse affect
while cornering hard..

Still there's something going on underneath on the passenger rear.. The
noise is quite annoying. Thus, happy the satellite is in soon.. :)

Any other things I should ask them to check. Or just wait and see what
they say..

Whatever they find, I'll have the results confirmed. If the DRC needs
dealing with, I'll make sure the best Audi shop in the Bay Area works on it..

Thanks for the help..

Don't know how this DRC conversation got on this Tire thread but..

Crispix, I think I know your car. Does it have silver interior and did you get it at Strong Audi? If yes to both, then yes, it's a DRC issue. The previous owner traded it in to Strong's because it had a DRC issue and he didn't want to pay to fix it (that car is out of original manufacturer warranty right?). It's a testament to the bad-mouthing I do about Strongs, that they would sell it without fixing the issue.
Sorry:w:

Yes I bought it from Strong Audi..

This puppy has ebony interior but there was another Avus
Silver there with the silver interior.

I didn't drive that one as it had more miles than what I was
looking for during my lengthy search.

Mine had 42K on the odometer when I purchased. It was
under CPO..

The other silver/silver one had about ~53K on it and was
not covered by CPO due to mileage issues. That may be
the one your speaking of.

According to the carfax, they received this silver/ebony
in late october 2007..

All of this still doesn't mean they didn't sell it with a DRC
problem.

I have the 300 point certification results. Will check to see
if it went over the shocks.

crispix - actually, I bought mine with 55k and the dealership CPO'ed it. If you bought your car at 42K _and_ they CPO'ed it. It means that you're covered for another 8K miles under the original warranty with maintenance coverage. After 50K is when your CPO coverage kicks in.

Interesting..

They never mentioned that I was covered under the original warranty..

Assumed it was CPO from here on out. They mentioned 2 years and
up to 100K..

Appreciate the info, that's good news..

They also told me in respect to the other RS6 ( silver/silver ) that
it was not under CPO as it had more than 50K.

Perhaps they were aware of that one having a DRC issue and chose
not to certify it..

If you're buying from a dealership and they DIDN'T CPO it, that to me smells like a rat. Esp. at a dealership where it's being sold besides one that is CPO'ed.

Just reviewed the 300 point inspection.

The following meets Audi's requirements with respect to undercarrriage..

Suspension arms and CV joints.
Sway bars, links, and bushings.
Struts, shocks, and springs.
Control arm and steering rack.

This inspection covers a lot of shiet. I have reservations on really
how thorough they are when performing it.

Do they really check everything. Hmm..

pyiu - just noticed your sig and have been giving some thoughts to getting my car detailed (it's about time). What are some tips from a pro's perspective about our car? And I know that pricing varies wildly but what kind of costs do you think is reasonable v. time spent by detailer?

for proper paint correction, and you being in CA I would say $350 for exterior all the way up to $900. Depending on what needs to be done.

The Factory warranty was 4 years/50,000 miles, whichever came first.
I suspect your car exceeded the 4 years while less than 50K miles?
You factory warranty is probably expired.
Good RS6 technicians check everything when they CPO certify the car.
RS6 certified Techs. I can strongly recommend are Simo at Sonnen, or Ray at Diablo. I'm not familiar with San Jose or other Bay Area shops.
Go to the AudiWorld RS6 Forum and ask for tech. recommendations for shops in your area.

Have you joined the Audi Club of N. Am.?
We have been members of the Golden Gate chapter since 2000.
You missed a great 2 day Audi DE at Laguna Seca on March 1 & 2.
Send me an e-mail address and I can provide more RS6 info.
(DRC shocks and central valves replaced, twice. 49.9K and 55K miles)

hey guys just called for a michelin PS2, and was told it would take 15 days to get! they could however get the "new" Pilot sport, which i was told is the same tire, only the "new name."

true or not? i was told the speed and load rating is identical.

unless you're desperate, I would wait for the old PS2s. Wait til there are more independent reviews of the "new" that's the old....

not particularly desparate, but i do notice a few things..

$22 cheaper each (not my highest priority...but still nice)

speed, tread wear, and load rating all identical.

tread is different.

pretty good ratings all around on tirerack.com from all the people who have used the tires.

really what i'm wondering is... is it truly "the same...only newer" or not really? and if not, why not...

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Pilot+Sport
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Michelin&model=Pilot+Sport&tirePageLocQty=

one thing i'm noticing with the reviews of the PS vs. the PS2 (though i also noticed the load rating at 95 vs. 99 for the ps2) is almost every ps review complained about tread wear...whereas almost none of the ps2'ers did.

guess it'll be ps2 time for me....

unless there's a significantly cheaper (or similarly priced but longer lasting???) alternative that's 95% of the tire for 60% of the price..

incidentally, as I documented in my other thread "oops...", I have to say, I really would recommend the Bridgestone RE-050A Pole Position that I bought. When I suffered my erstwhile "tyre failure" going at a brisk 120+ there was no major jitter on the handling and I made it safely to the shoulder in probably about 250 to 300 ft while suffering minimal (I hope, heading down to the dealership tomorrow to confer some more with my tech) damage to my rims! While half the outter tread was left on the freeway, the inner tyre remain quite solid and we made it safely to the shoulder. Very nice tyres indeed and very good pricing from tirerack:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Bridgestone&tireModel=Potenza+RE050A+Pole+Position

One thing to note however that PS are not available to me in a ZR20. It seems like Michelins jump from 19 straight to 20s.
