I have been looking at the numbers on the RS6 and RS4 and it seems that the RS6 is still a little quiker. Anybody have any thoughts on this???

Not the point of these cars, but it's fun to discuss. Honestly, I don't know the stats on the cars. Check motortrend, car and driver, etc... for the best 1/4 mile times. Or - spend a couple grand for engine mods on both cars, and the RS6 will smoke the RS4 straight line every time.

Autocar tested a RS6 when it was launched and it's time to 200km/h was I believe 17something seconds. The RS4 does the same speed in 14.5~15.5 seconds depending on which magazine, so you do the maths.

But if you spent a £1K on some tuning parts and the out come would be different.

the rs6 does the standing 1/4 in 14.1, 0-100 km/hr in 4.9, 0-200km/hr in 17.6

the rs4 does the 0-100 km/hr in 4.9, 0-200km/hr in 16.6

stock + is at about 4.3 s 0-100 km, not sure about 200 time. Put MTM chip there and that's it ... :thumb:

I suggest someone with an RS4 to make the same movie as I did then we can compare...

My RS6 avant 0-250 km/h on youtube..

Motor Trend's RS6 ran the 1/4 mile in 12.63@108. This is the best RS6 1/4 time out there. The RS4 I have seen in slower times, but at 109mph. So, the RS6 would win...

rs4 1/4 was 13.69 @101 with autoweek...

The weather conditions will come into play especially with the RS6. I can't comment on US tests but over here the RS4 has always tested quicker.

For theoretical performance try this website;

http://www.letstorquebhp.com/calculator.asp

RS4 @ 1700kg (guessed real world weight)

RS6 @ 1900kg (guessed real world weight)

RS4 / RS6 / RS6+
0-60 - 4.4 secs / 4.8 secs / 4.6 secs
0-100 - 10.6 secs / 11.1 secs / 10.6 secs
1/4 mile - 12.9 secs / 13.3 secs / 13.1 secs
speed@1/4 - 110mph / 109mph / 111mph
HP/Ton - 251hp / 240hp / 256hp

There are other figures listed for drag strip performance (slightly quicker)

As I say, these are theoretical figures based on simple information given, but do tend to be very close to real world figures.

Well it's a good question.

I won against an RS4 at the Silver Dollar Raceway SE Track day located in Reynolds, Georgia. May have been driver error on the RS4 owner's part since they had to shift and I just dumped it after a turbo load to the rev limiter's 3000 RPM (left foot brake hold) with my car in "Sport". Both cars were stock. I had 48K miles on my 2003 RS6 and the RS4 owner had 3K miles on his 2007.

Here are the numbers.

RS6 RS4

R/T .855 .425

60' 2.238 2.085

330 5.913 5.801

1/8 8.871 8.854

MPH 83.08 80.78

1000 11.396 11.486

1/4 13.515 13.725

MPH 104.40 100.37

Both Lanes Staged with Autostart Compulink On.

Second run for my RS6 had a 1/4 mile time of 13.474 @ 104.20 MPH. RS4 had a 1/4 mile time of 13.843 @ 99.48 MPH. I posted the first run since it was closer than the second. There is a benefit to having a manual transmission for launches, but you can also over/under rev very easily if you don't pay close attention to the proper engine speeds on the go. I think the second run he must have shifted late out of second. The first run is the better indicator I think.

These numbers are taken right off the computer slips handed to me after each run. Over time my RS6 1/4 mile times got worse with the engine heating up and the afternoon sun warming up the air temperature. It was about 50 degrees F on my first and second runs. Both were back to back with about 15 minutes stage time in between waiting on the other cars in line to run.

My overall best time was taken at Orlando Speed World Dragway (Night of Fire) against a AC Cobra 454 Replica.

I ran a 13.301 1/4 mile @ 107.30 MPH.

I'm not sure how Motor Trend got a stock RS6 to run a mid 12 1/4 mile. Seems impossible to me since the rev limiter kicks in at 3000 RPM with a loaded brake launch. You really can't spool up the turbos for a solid launch unless you can hold at 3300-3500 RPM minimum. It's a safeguard to not lose the auto tranny which is already weak, so no way around that unless the APR/MTM/GIAC tranny chips eliminate that. Anyone know?

Of note: My best times came in when I left the traction control ON and did not use the Tiptronic to shift. Selecting "Sport" worked best.

Also, in a 1/4 mile run you don't ever make it to 4th gear.

Lot's of fun, but this is my daily driver "practical" car, so I doubt I will do any more runs unless I chip the car. I'd rather go to a road course as my next adventure.

Any RS4 owners getting better times than what I have posted?

Any RS6 owners getting better times that what I have posted?

Sorry about the crappy photos, I forgot my good digital camera, so had to use my Treo 700P's camera.

I really, really liked the RS4. Much more updated looks and interior. A little too small for me as a four door, but still what a sweet ride.

We had a great day. The Lexus Club and SE Mercedes Club were there too with some new AMG 63/65 factory cars they came down from NJ and had a dyno day the day before. Some P-Cars and a few race cars running 9's as well. The really cool car to watch was an MB G55 Kleeman run 12 sec 1/4 mile times! It was like watching a brick thrown through the air! You can see it in the background of one of the photos. I never got a shot of the RS4 since I spent most of the morning on the open runs behind the wheel. By the time I pulled in to take a break (and return a borrowed helmet!) the RS4 had left.. maybe in shame?? LOL I didn't even get a chance to really chat with him other than at the staging lane with the windows down. They were rotating through 70+ cars during the open runs. I've got my friend who runs SE Lexus Owner's Club checking with the other attendees to see if anyone took photos of the RS4 and also the Nissan Skyline that was there as well.

Not sure if the owner of the blue RS4 visits this board? Bueller? Bueller?

For "subtle" Audi cars, the pair of RS's we had there attracted a lot of attention.

The RS4 is definitely slightly quicker no doubt. Then of course the RS4 requires more skills as it has a manual gear box and any failure or hesitation may kill the chrono.

Your above comparison is great but do not foget that the RS4 needs at least 10'000km before to deliver full power which is not the case at 3'000km.

Anyway both are great cars and for shure the RS6 achieves great chrono easier thanks to its auto gearbox.

I think RS4 is faster stock vs. stock.

I have made only two runs with my stock RS6 just for fun and the results were:

1.
60-ft 2,137
ET 13,235
Speed 172,01 (106,9 mph)

2.
60-ft 2,143
ET 13,270
Speed 172,13

Both runs I was launching from idle, gearlever on D position, full tank of gas, sea level and temperature was appr. 15 C (59F).

In US market, RS4 has "official" 1/4 time 13,2@106,8 (yahoo autos). ET can vary a lot depending on drivers skills, car setup & track conditions, but trap speed is more consistant and gives good indication about car's power. As both cars are 4wd, there shouldn't be much difference in chassis ability or grip level. Major difference is transmission type and therefore in 60-ft times.

I previously owned C5 S6 with 6-speed manual and I did manage to launch in with 1,9 60-ft time and it had 80 hp less than RS4, was a bit heavier and I dropped the clutch from 4500 rpm. So I think, when dropping the clutch from higher revs, RS4 short time may be even as low as 1,8.

Assuming that this 13,2 run of RS4 was achieved with 2,1 60-ft time (because trap speed and ET is identical to my RS6) it means, that with much more brutal start it can be reduced by 0,3 sec. which equals 0,45 improvement of ET. So good driver in good conditions could run 12,8 with RS4, if he seriously abuses the car.

So, average driver vs. average driver probably RS6 wins, as it's much more easier to drive. With good driver RS4 probably wins, but does such "win" make any sense ?:)

There is a huge difference on the RS4 if you drop the clutch normally or if you drop it form 4000rpm. The gain can be up to 0.5sec.

I know some car mags have, but I'm talking about us -- everyday drivers going to a track. Here's the link to my 12.95 run with a pic of the slip from Bradenton Motorsports in Florida last March. Prep began with the prior tankful and four or five other steps, including traction control OFF. Best times will come only with temps below 70 F IMO. The colder the better, I think, until you get into the low 40s, at which point traction loss might intervene with the "summer" or "performance" tires that most of us use.
