I don't like the looks of the new BMWs and this one is no different. That said, a wagon is much more practical and a great idea for BMW to finally offer one. Kudos to them.:thumb:

Well, I think it looks better than the saloon. But I still having problems with the new BMW design... it just isn't that good looking.. :/

The perfect performance BMW for the winter. It allows you to put lots of extra weight over the rear axle to get some grip.:hihi:

Joking a side, why?

If you wanted to carry extra loads why would one pick it over a X5 4.8.

It took them some time indeed. Very nice...a family car with 507hp and rear wheel drive....just a Hi-Per Audi wannabe if you ask me.
Hi-Per family cars(station wagons) are Audi...period:cool2: .

Peace,

Javier

BMW was first with the high performance wagon concept. M5 340 HP in 1992 :applause:

I know that the two can't be compared on a handling/performance level, my statement was why buy an estate M5 or any M model for that matter. I don't see the logic in a hi-peformance rwd estate car. It doesn't suit the job as well as X5 on a practical level or the RS6 Avant which can turn it's hand to anything.

No, 19992 with the 3,8 liter engine.

Gustav,

You tell me and the rest of us what the point of this car is, because I am at a lost. The M3/M Roadster & Coupe/M5 and M6 I get, just not the estate versions.

Help me understand.

I kinda understand the M5 Estate.

For the same reasons I drive an Avant - I need the lugage space. Someone may prefer BMW's, doesn't want a SUV and wants high performance. However due to winter conditions I prefer AWD. :D

Ok, Gustav.

I am very good informed on that car, 3.8l 340 hp 6 speed...

I don't want to question your knowledge, but I was so sure that '94 was correct year...

But, you are probably wright...

In my opinion, this car will be a hit among bmw lovers. Too bad they haven't widened the body a bit on the rear tires. I do not think this is an ugly car to be honest.

The first E34 M5 Touring was produced in March 1992 with production running through to August 1995. All were 3.8 and obviously LHD.

As for the current model, I think they should have kept the standard M5 alloys rather than put the M6 wheels on it. The extra slab-sidedness of the Touring makes the wheels look tiny.

That trend is very present on the limousine, all most 85 % of all e60 M5s I saw had those M6 wheells...

Your right Andy. I've been seeing more and more Saloon's with the M6 alloys. These do not look that bad.

It's just with the added bulk of the Touring model, the wheels look lost in the arches!

The only explanation i can find is that BMW don't want to let audi and MB rule the competition, they want there share in, and of course they can relie on many buyers who will go just for the name...

Having purchased an E55 estate for my wife, I got it because I didn't want to get an SUV. I'm still not a big fan of Mercedes. It is not the best handling vehicle in the world, but it gets the job done and it has plenty of power. The fact of the matter is none of these cars make sense. They're bought because the people that buy them are passionate about their performance.

The only reason I didn't get the M5 estate for her is that it wasn't available.
I would imagine the bulk of these cars are purchased by enthusiast husbands.

These cars have nothing to do with sanity or reason.

Again, Chris Bangle's risking his life and career. Another cut edge design and looks a bit crude.

Leadfoot
January 21st, 2007, 10:36
I personally rate the 5 Series as one of Bangle's best efforts (outside) but inside this minimal look goes against everything a luxury car stands for. Who wants a car with six buttons to push, not me, I prefer something interesting that can hold my attention when in a traffic jam and sorry, recent BMWs aren't it.

All the better for Audi.:D

iDrive is the worst ever. The HUD of the BMWs are those smart projection style which keeps the drive's attention on the road, while the iDrive's doing the opposite. U've got to waste much time to use the stereo, GPS etc. I would give a tick to the option to remove this feature (Only if it's available).

Gustav

I must say that in a recent test by either Autoexpress or Autocar where they tested ease of use and distraction of using the equipment in modern cars. Porsche won with the 997 and believe it or not they found the iDrive to be better and less of a distraction than the Audi system.

Now that goes against what I think all of us would have thought.

The difference is that it took me 10 mins to learn the MMI system and find where everything is. iDrive takes longer to learn imo.

Agreed, even though I don't have a A6/8 or Q7 I found it's system easy to find my way around, I don't have any experience of the iDrive but all previous reports said it was impossible, they must have improved it........a LOT.

Didn't know the numbers, but I drove a regular E-class on a "safety driving course" and as soon as the tail started to slide, it just whipped around without ANY control whatsover. Not a safe car to drive without ESP.

Like Clarkson said: "I doubt this car would stay on the road if it didn't have all those electronics." - think this was about the E55.
