Didn't dawn on me until well after I purchased my RS4 that it doesn't have a spare tire for weight-saving reasons. Is the tire filling goop that's included safe and reliable in anyone's guess? Is there a super light spare I could put in that is more reliable than the goop, but that still doesn't weight my baby down too much? I hate to have to buy a new tire and rim just for this purpose.

The goop is alright. It is just like the M-Mobility system on the M cars from BMW. Just make sure you drive at least 15-20 miles after you put it in to spread the goop around. If you don't it will settle in one spot any create an imbalance in the tire.

The goop does work quite well - it fixed this sidewall split for long enough to get me 20 miles to get the tyre replaced.

That's encouraging.

It still leaves me a little uneasy though, considering how low profile these tires are and the potential for rim damage...

Is there no lightweight temp rim and tire package out there?

Well that tyre split after only having the car for a week and I was in Le Mans at the time for the 24hr back in June. There was no indication of any external damage to the tyre i.e. I hadn't hit something, so I assume it was just a faulty tyre.

Luckily due to some contacts I had in Audi I managed to get a replacement at Le Mans from Audi Germany who had spare wheels and tyres for the Le Mans Safety Cars. (I was going to take the local tyre suppliers 3 days to get a tyre to me)

Here's a couple of pics of the Audi engineers sorting me out and giving the car a quick check over at the time.

When I got home my dealer tried to find me a temp rim/tyre package but non exist. Now I carry a full size spare tyre (not rim) in the boot when I go on long trips where I think that getting a spare may be a problem.

Clearly an advantage to have Audi techs at the ready. However for the rest of us...

Good thought to just have the tire, considering the challenge of finding a tire that fits our vehicles in the wilds. Thanks for the reco.

Here's a pic of the tyre in the boot, there's obviously less space in the cabriolet boot than there is in the saloon.
