View Full Version : Security glass - worth having?

There is an option for the RS4 - security glass with double layers of glass. Is there anyone that has that option on the car? If so, is it worth having?

The salesman says there will be a reduction of wind-noise at high speed and less hot in the car when there is sun.

They have to catch you first before they can swing a pipe at your window LOL.

The noise issue is interesting, but the rest of the car needs to be setup as a Quiet car to really take advantage of that kind of noise reduction.

The high end luxury cars with that glass are also well insulated for noise elsewhere so you'd have to drive one with and one without to hear the difference!

From a security standpoint! WOW, has it come to that! Used to be an option for a car used by a high profile rich guy with a driver and a trail behind security team! If you need security glass to be driving yourself and a date to a movie, TIME TO MOVE to a safer place! OUCH.

Those just add more weight, so not worth it :)

I had security film fitted by a local specialist - much cheaper, much less weight, same security benefits.

I had it done after some low life smashed my front passenger window to steal the bracket for a camera detector (just the bracket!). The OE fit alarm was totally useless because it's so damn quiet - didn't hear it even though we were less than 10 feet away from the car watching TV.

Auto alarms are GD worthless, everyone ignores them, it's the ignition disabling system that is worth while.

But when some POS does $1000 damage to a window/door to steal some $20 item, and YOU CATCH THEM....you'll never get any satisfaction from the legal system on that kind of inconvenience.

What used to be a DISCOUNT for having an alarm is now a SIRCHARGE if you DON"T have an alarm.
Go figure.

I'll tick the flame thrower option to make sure the car is safe... but is no use as around where I live the RS models have the highest rate of hijacking!!!

Hi, I am about to order the RS4 and considering the double glazing windows options (??same as security glass??). I am mainly after more thermal insulation because tinted film get scratched after a while. I have 3 young children! I'm however curious about the noise reduction - is it noticable? Does anyone have this option fitted in their RS4? If yes, please share your experience. Thanks heaps.

Went to a dealer today and had a look at the double windows. It´s only the door windows that are double by the way...

The glass on the double windows are thinner than the usual ones but as they are in double layers the total thickness are slightly more, but not much. Therefore the extra weight that comes with it is not noticable, in fact it could not be more than a kilo per window.

On the upside there is:

harder for work for the thieves
more safe (not much but anyway...) in case of an accident
less fog, if any, when starting up the car when it is cold outside
less sound from the mirrors in high speed

Audi cant tint the windows but there is always aftermarket which often is better in these cases as you can customise the tint in your own like.

The choice is quite simple in my case - I´ll definetly go for the security glass!

Hi Ricoloco. Thanks for more info on that. Did the dealer tell you anything about better thermal (heat, it gets very hot in Australia)? My dealer here is not at all helpful. You would think they have all knowledge about a car they are selling!

OzRS4, it´s amazing how uninformed and sometimes uninterested the dealers can be, trust me, I know.

But the security glass is quite common on the A8 and has been that for a couple of years.

Yes, it has at thermal effect and reduces both heat and cold. The best combination is definetly security glass and after delivery, go aftermarket and tint the windows. Especially if you got an avant that has got more glass area than the sedan.

This option also comes with a thick black border around the ridges of the window to "disquise" the fact it's security glass/double glazing.

Cool option though, but not worth while unless the rest of the car is armoured. Stick with the film, much better.

I´m going to have a black car with the black optics so that souldnt be any problem. On the A8 it doesnt come with that black border. How big is it on the RS4?

oh, the A8 goes without the border? Didn't realise this.

I haven't seen this option on the RS4.

A high percentage of cars with such an option has this noticeable border.

OzRS4, I went for the double glazing, I think less UV penetration and heat build up in the car, may be a slight effect on noise, but I don't think noticeable. It is fairly cheap as an option, and you can still do after market tinting if you so wish.

PM me if you want more info. By the way where are you in Oz?
