What does the solenoid do on the cam chain tensioner ? Thanks for any help.

EXACTLY what does it do ? The reason I ask is that I suddenly had a noisy cam chain tensioner, so my thought was that either I had a broken shoe or the solenoid might be bad. Thank you for the quick response safe.
I think broken shoe, which side? (Pass)
Solenoid will throw a code

Driver side. That's my guess too as it happened very suddenly. When replacing the tensioner is there any special start up procedure ?

Now you should consider to bay new CCT.

That is what I plan to do.
Genuine Audi or aftermarket?

Genuine Audi
I went with Genuine Audi also, but the non-genuine appears to be pretty much exactly the same since I doubt an aftermarket company would gear things up to make such a low production part! LOL. $700 a side. plus 56 new bolts and the seal kit.
Can be done without dropping engine. and also the EGR valves are right there and so easy to swap while the cam tensioners are being replaced. Just saying. I should have spent the additional $600 on those parts DAM IT!
