In the days when the planes flying off flast-tops were propellor jobs, the skippers used to turn their ships into the wind and get the engine room to make maximum revolutions. Well most of these jobbies could and can scoot along, so making 30 plus knots into a 40 knot headwind meant that the windspeed across the deck was comfortably above the planes' landing and stalling speeds. So in a bad seaway, when the deck might rise and fall 50 feet or so, they could wait off the stern of the carrier until the right moment in the oscillation and then just accelerate forward a few feet and land, virtually at a standstill. The jetjobs aren't so good at this.
