B7 Audi RS4 finally breaks cover

This week's Auto Sport und Motor (published in Germany) has a full feature on Audi's new model strategy and includes among other models a story about and pictures of the new RS4. It looks terrific. I will get a copy of the magazine as soon as it's availabale in the UK and post pictures here. I expect the article to carry reliable information on the launch date, final spec and likely cost.

Yes, the wheel arches are certainly more bulbous and filled with tyres that must be at least 19 inches. It's hard to see, but the lip on the front bumper appears to have been extended to the wheel arches, creating a much more aggressive look. This is no ordinary S4. The new grille looks great on this car.

    -new S3 with 3.2 V6 Biturbo, 330ps. (2006)
    -new S8 with 'Audi-V10 mit 550ps. (2006)

    more for future:

As you well know, the article ends with "Computerretuschen: Nextline" so although it looks like a plausible RS4-look, it could well be just the S4 photoshopped with the RS6 styling cues.

    Two things:

    1. The CGI's in Auto Motor und Sport are usually pretty accurate, (they got the new M5 right, plus the Merc CLS and Z4) so I think this interpretation of the RS4 is pretty good.

    2. The story confirms what has been rumoured for some time, and it's Audi's engine guru who was interviewed for the article, so we can presume he won't have put his credibility on the line.

    - V8 naturally aspirated engine generating 425 bhp. Nice.
    - Will be shown at Geneva 2005 in March. I'll be there.

Still don't know if its the new FSI V8 engine or what gearbox options will be offered. With that kind of horsepower can we assume 0-100 kph in comfortably under 5.0 seconds plus an unrestricted top speed of about 190 mph? I hope so.

To be honest, I cannot see what all the fuss is about the styling. The CGI in Auto Motor und Sport makes it look pretty darn good IMHO. (By the way RS4ever, the pictures inside the magazine are the same as on the cover; you can also check out their website.)

This is the car the S4 should have been: not an M3, but a whole lot more usable performance.

Hopefully you're not trying to tell all of us who have RS 6s that our cars are ugly? If so, wrong forum. You must be looking for www.bangle.com

Styling is, of course, always a personal thing and the RS4 candidate car on Ring pics on the S4/RS4 forum looks partly disguised especially as regards to the true front end and the AMS picture of the new RS4 is photoshopped.

The demands and tastes of people in different markets and age categories are probably different. Moreover, Audi it seems still has difficulties to cope with the other Bavarian spectre and many of its loud loyalists.

Still, I hope that Audi cherishes its cool style/image so well again demonstrated particularly in the RS6 and does not stray too far away from the mainstream taste of the most likely main target group for the new RS4 - i.e. 28-45 Y high-income/wealth males with a family.

Hopefully the AMS pic is closer to the final truth than the front end of the Ring pic - it pretty successfully blends more attitude with grace.

But at the end of the day, it is ability that counts and here we can only hope for the best - although coming up with a new RS4 that really moves the game forward vs. old RS4 as well as current opposition and that dynamically betters or even barely matches the already effectively 2 year old M3 CSL is extremely difficult with the DNA that Audi Sport engineers start out with.
