Secondary Air pump - proper part number

Hello all. I picked up a secondary air pump from Autohaus. They had a couple listed as compatible with the RS6, so
I picked the less expensive model but the thing is probably not compatible with our car. It has an input and output and the wire plugs in on the bottom surface. I can return it easy enough but figured I ask who has replaced this and what was the process.

I can see three bolts holding the mount for the pump which apparently bolts to the frame from the under side at three points which are on spring loaded attachment points. The mount bracket is captivated by some other hardware so I am no sure it will come out easily.

I just pulled mine out, as far as I recall there's one hose, one electrical connector, and then three bolts that hold the bracket to the car, all of which I was easily able to access from the top. I believe they are 10 hex head bolts. I also happen to have the pump that I'd be more than willing to part with. Let me know if you're interested.

P1054, thank you, any problems getting the bracket out past that fixed silver pipe?

If you have not done yet, I removed three bracket bolts, two hose and twist whole pump. Fender side bracket will go under the black hose.

I have the proper part sitting in my garage, planning on swapping it tomorrow. I hope that fixes the problem.

Mike, sorry for not responding, I missed your post. I don't recall it being too big an issue. Some wiggling and twisting like Andriy said and it should come out easily enough. No engine pull required!

LOL, don't need necessarily to get the bracket out, but rather turn it over enough to get at the three bolts that mount the pump to the bracket. I am most concerned that this is the real solution.....shall see.

    New pump is in.

The bracket flexes easily to get it out, just have to watch other lines etc and work it out slowly.

The three mount screws are an odd mix. I took some photos but that part does not show well, sorry. They are plastic/rubberized kind of flexible mounts (auto spell keeps changing "Mounts" to "Months") with a metal bolt on each end. You need to get a wrench or plier on the base of it to loosen it but the lower aspect has plastic/rubber covering the nut. The top nut and bolt will loosen but if you keep turning it the plastic/rubberized middle section will break. I broke one LOL. The part number is 4B3133567 and I guess I will order new ones. "bonded rubber bush" is the listing.

I cleared the codes and started the car. The pump was silent and I was beginning to think it was not working at all. So I drove to the gestation and back. So first trip no CEL. We shall see.

Drove again, pump is working, not as loud as the original but I can hear it. No codes...

Failed again. I'm going to pull intake box in the spring and try to figure this out. Wasted $600 in parts so far. Can't see a loose hose etc. must be combi valves BOTH not working? Is that possible? likely?

    Hardly possible and very unlikely.
Again, what was the DTC you keep getting?

    Scan from this morning:

    5 Faults Found:

17831 - Secondary Air Injection System; Bank 1
    P1423 - 002 - Insufficient Flow - MIL ON
17819 - Secondary Air Injection System; Bank 2
    P1411 - 002 - Insufficient Flow - MIL ON
17887 - Brake Boost Vacuum System
    P1479 - 008 - Mechanical Failure
    17865 - Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor 2 (G236)
    P1457 - 001 - Open or Short to Plus - Intermittent
    16840 - EVAP System
    P0456 - 002 - Very Small Leak Detected - Intermittent

So it's a both side problem. Solenoid is new, pump is new. Only thing would be bad Oxygen Sensor (my largest fear when replacing all four) but that would have to be TWO bad ones out of four, so very unlikely

The new pump is quite loud ? Running against closed CombiValve?

I also replace the vacuum relay on the vacuum line, that initially appeared to have cleared the problem as I did not get a CEL for about two weeks. That is when I bit the bullet and bought the new Secondary Air pump. I had read about them failing but could not confirm this. The new one is shinny and new, but I get the CEL again! Maybe a vacuum line came off? I'll take a look.

I have not taken the time to pull the air cleaner intake assembly, been waiting for better weather. Every time I go out to work on my car in the garage, my wife lets the FCUKGONDOING GODDOIHGOID FROIGLJDLD dog out through the garage every FOU$)(UOU DF)*(&)(*D five minutes and opens the garage and thus freezes me!

So I am going to check the vacuum lines again. My understanding is that the way to check the Combi Valves is to apply vacuum to the combi valve vacuum port and 'blow' by month through the hose and see if you feel resistance? Odd. I think taking the hose off the secondary air pump and starting the engine would show huge amounts of exhaust gas coming out that hose? NO? If the combi valves are open then the exhaust will follow the path of least resistance and blow out there. There is no check valve in the system as far as I can tell?

    This other error confounds me.

17887 - Brake Boost Vacuum System
    P1479 - 008 - Mechanical Failure

The brakes feel perfectly fine. My mechanic said if could be one of many sensors in the antilock brake system. I think the guys who write the code for the ECU should go hang themselves. Why not have more info dumped out than such a cryptic piece of information if indeed there are other 'sensors' which are giving input to the ECU, then there should be an accounting of such information?

    17865 - Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor 2 (G236)
    P1457 - 001 - Open or Short to Plus - Intermittent

This used to be on both sides, but after the 're-solder' thing it only shows on one side. I will 're-re-solder' once the weather improves? August? September? Not sure. God I hate living in NY. This does not trip a CEL.

    16840 - EVAP System
    P0456 - 002 - Very Small Leak Detected - Intermittent

Gas cap no doubt! LOL. Usually Trips a CEL if it happens a certain number of times.

Funny the insufficient flow thing trips a CEL right away, but if your torque converter is not Locking then Tough Shit because it will only trip a CEL if it persists for 1000 years or more and by that time your transmission is dead. Nice design. Nice programing. Maybe the TCU programers can join the ECU programs on the unemployment line. Bastards.

A faulty vac pump, or a leak in the hose/tubing or a bad booster vac supply check valve, or a bad brake booster are all possible causes for the 17887 DTC stored.
This "bug" in vacuum system can also be related to your SAI troubles (if you're not getting the vacuum to SAI solenoid - it can't open combi valves).

Yes, I had read through that before, when I took the tubing off the Solenoid there was still plenty of vacuum, it was sucking for about 20 to 30 seconds LOL. My finger was able to get stuck to the open end of the tubing....

Vac Pump is where? ( I have to check my notes, I think I found that before) Does that not draw from the intake directly?
Where is Booster Vac Supply Check Valve? If any of that stuff is under the GD intake manifold, I'm going to leave it as is! LOL.

Funny I reset the CEL yesterday. I let the car run in place until the Secondary pump stopped running and then drove. I am going to do this for the next week or so. It seems that when I drive off without waiting the CEL comes on a few minutes later. LOL. I did check the connections at the solenoid and they are still in place as are the tubes connecting to the CombiValve vacuum ports. I HATE intermittent problems LOL.

I have to figure out how to test the above items you mentioned.

A while ago I tried that Short Trip in Basic settings and it was ok.

I also checked the tubing going to and leaving the Vacuum Pump and that seamed ok.

I'll have to run through that process again.

My mechanic actually bought the Smoke tester for vacuum leaks to work up my problem when the Cam Tensioners failed and he said there were no vacuum leaks. LOL. I may bite the bullet and bring the car to an AUDI dealer.

The test method from the Bentley manual is very different than the VAGCOM thing. it's quite cryptic.

but I figured it out..LOL.....I'll run through it again.

I didnt have time to read the whole thread but did you perform the vag tests on the pump and valves?

also my guy can code these out and it will still pass emission showing clear on readiness
