Help! six speed shifter linkage problem

On my way to work this morning all of the sudden I can move my shift knob left and right about 4 inches in any given gear. i'm still able to shift through all six gears. But I'm concerned that something is going to fall apart on my way home if I even make it. I have a few tools at work with me but I do not have a lift or a ramp and cannot get the car up. Is there anything I can check from the top side to tighten this up until I can get home and get up on a lift?

It sounds like your linkage cross brace might have come loose (either the red or blue box in this image). If the main brace came loose, I think your shifter would flop all over the place.

Probably not much you can do from the top.

Cool thanks. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the ride home.

Did you make it home? I'm curious what the problem turns out to be.

It was the Redbox. It turns out that the person that did my six speed swap did not use the correct hardware. It was supposed to be a combination hex bolt to hold that bushing in place. Instead they had used a small Allen bolt with a small washer been allowed the crossarm to slip off of the bushing by breaking the plastic part of the bushing. Nice job
