Erik,
With a new interest in the German automobile such as Audi or Porsche can you explain the number system. It looks to me like this piture of the 997? is newer than the 993 would that be right? so was last year the 996? but called 911?

They're all called 911 in daily speech.

I think it's in this order:
964
993
996 <-- Current model

I am SOO in love with the 997! Finally round headlights again, even though I don't hate the current. And how FAT doesn't that rear look? Attitude I'd say.

Stop me whenever I'm wrong, but ain't it so that the model series name is 911 and the different "builds" have a number prefix, 993, 996, 997 and so on?

Yes,that´s corect.

The first introduced 911 was the 911 SC the next build "code" was the 964,993,996...997...998(2006/07).

The 964, 993, 996 etc is the manufacturers designation of the 911 line, which to those enthusiasts is a model that's evolved.

Each new evolution (or new chassis) of the same model needs to be identified seperately from each other, hence the 964, 993, 996 etc.

Although, what fascinates me is that the 911 was just called the 911 before the 964 came along and the company was restructured, then the company restructured again when the 993 came along. This is what I think came across such a big step in the evolution of the designations.

Think about the 911 title being a country. i.e America. Then the designation from the factory is the county New Jersey= 964, Florida= 993 and so on. The towns/cities of the different County are the different model types, Chicago=GT3, NYC=GT2 LA= Turbo but you can only have a model type (town/city) that is in the county.

I hope this makes sense for you Stuart. I used geography as a reference point, that hopefully you yourself can understand due to your map making skills.. I can't understand what I've just typed! :bang:

Great to see them going back to some of those stunning details. as the 993 widebodies (C2S, C4S, TT, & TTS) have always been my favorites. Looking forward to the official debut.

Are those spy pics? When is the 997's planned release? Will they initially release normally aspirated models, followed by turbo and GT models like the GT2, GT3, etc.?

It could well be an updated 996, not an all new 911 entirely. This is due within the next 3 years (I recon prototypes will be shown at motor shows within the next 18 months). There's rumours that the current 996 Turbo will get the X50 pack (450bhp spec motor) included before it's phased out sometime next year.

And of course Porsche will release the 911 spectaculars (GT3, GT2, Turbo) in the range. :devil:

This car is going to be spectacular.

I've heard from the grapevine that the motor will have 345bhp in it's normal form with the Carrera2 being the first model available,

Porsche will also build the other current 996 models along side the 997 C2 untill the 997 versions of each 911 will become available. Twelve different variations will be available throughout the model's life cycle.

The Interior has a centre console and dash that's influenced by the Cayenne with a kinda convex area where the air vents are. ala 993 interior.

I can't wait for it.
