    FMU's RS6 - Oil + Trans Cooler Fitment

Well, I promised you guys that I would keep y'all updated on the progress of our RS6. Since our head engineer and fabricator are now back from their R&D mission to Qatar (home of the 2022 World Cup!), they've jump-started the fabrication garage back to its hellishly-fast pace. Here's an excerpt from our blog:

With the Audi RS6 (as with most cars), creating more power can put greater-than-average strain on the transmission. Being that the RS6 is only available as an automatic, both repairing or replacing such a transmission can become cost-prohibitive. Therefore, we set out to fix the problem of all that excess strain and heat on the stock ZF transmission. Our solution was to create a new intercooler for the transmission that utilized a greater surface area (for greater heat dissipation) and a greater capacity as well.

When pushing higher horsepower numbers and pushing the engine hard in general, the oil temperature can also factor into performance degradation. Since the oil and transmission coolers are both contained in the same tiny little unit, we decided to replace them both at once with separate units. Obviously the larger surface area and greater overall capacity will create an environment in which the oil and the transmission can be subject to less heat and therefore less overall hindrances.

We just finished putting together and pressure testing the new coolers for the RS6. We’ve also included a shot of the old cooler mounted up, so you can see just how much difference to expect in overall heat dissipation:

I wonder if the weasels will complain about this too?

BTW, thanks for the update and clear pictures. I dont mind reading the progress of this project. We are mostly all grown up around here and appreciate good work.

andrew let me know about the email question when you are able....TY, nice work, let us know how much cooler trans runs, assuming you guys wiring up a trans temp gauge?

We're not even going to start postulating prices on this baby yet...we're still in earlier stages of design and testing. We still have plenty of temperature tests to run, as well. We expect good temp drops, but we can't stand firm on any numbers yet. Time will tell.

I'll keep you guys updated in this thread.

Many members have the Sportec cooling mod (search is your friend) where the engine tray has an additional vent to keep things cool/etc.

Will your temp testing include/exclude this mod?
The easy answer is no but I thought I would toss this into the mix...

Since our RS6 does not have this mod, it's probably safe to say that we won't be testing with this. We're still working on perfecting the RS6's fuel system, though, so there's plenty of time before testing to think about that. I'll pass the info along to the rest of the guys, though, to see if the Sportec cooling mod is a potential option.

Thanks FMU for all the tasty stuff you are bringing to the site.

    This is on my list.

Anybody else do this? Maybe have a local radiator shop build them, thoughts?

Which presents a question. Has anyone done much driving with Vagcom logging there Transmission temps just to see how much hotter the fluid gets when you drive more aggressively or after 30min to 1hr of driving? Seems like something I may try to track next time I drive the car.

On my list of things to do....I'd like to get a baseline in case I make future changes, also just want to see how close it gets to the danger zone with the current setup.

Ok, so found a few shops to do the build, planning on this over winter, ready for spring! We've still got some 75 degree days left this Fall, so I'll take the car out for a good flogging and log trans fluid temps. Any input on the project is appreciated. Seems like a great way to cool the oil for an estimated $2k...

I'm waffling on what to do with the 6MT project, as I'm not cooling the trans fluid. The last 6MT car of mine just had the just had the oil circuit of the stock cooler in use.

I've been eyeing up a Setrab 53-10749 that will sit nicely in place of the stock unit. Maybe you could just use two of these? One for the oil and one for the trans? Since they're around $400 each, I'm sure you could have them mounted and plumbed and be all in at less than $2k.

Does the 01E or one of it's versions (Diesel) have an internal pump for an external oil cooler?

Not sure about diesels but the allroads came with them. Any 01E can be fitted with the pump and fittings, though.

Wouldn't that block air going to the radiator...same reasoning on why a FMIC doesn't work well on our cars?
