    Newbie with VAGCOM questions

So I got my VAGCOM in the mail today and decided to try it out. I had many more failures than expected.

I did a forum search and from the comments it sounds like disconnecting the battery may cause some codes to pop up that are not really codes. I have disconnected the battery a couple of times recently so I am hoping this is the case.

My thought is to clear the codes and see if the show again. Do you think there is any harm in clearing the codes and driving on the car? The paranoid person in me doesn't want to harm the car by driving when codes are showing.

I am heading out of town tomorrow but the car is going to an Audi Dealer (scary I know). A couple of options I have are to
    - Clear the codes and drive around tonight to see if they surface again
    - Leave the codes as is
    - Clear the codes

    Thanks

Ok, let's take it from the top.....
Only one of these codes is the result of disconnecting the battery, and that is the low voltage to terminal 30 18010. The other fifty of them are legitimate faults. The fuel trim lean codes are the result of catalyst efficiency. This is because your car has no pre-cats, and the secondary o2 sensors are not tuned out of the ecu. The MAF sensor is either faulty, or you have a large amount of un-metered air leaking by it. Possibly a MAF sensor seal. The trans temp sensor has been discussed recently. The harness has to be replaced, as the sensor is part of the harness. It also appears that your HVAC recirculation flap has failed or frozen up.

Edit: Like Tozo said, clear them and see which ones resurface, or, if you're planning on taking it in, don't clear any of them.

    Chung,

Would you complete a data log set? I wanted to compare your Eurocharge 91oct tune to the new revamped EC tune. I think you may want to upgrade to the new version before you drive your car much more. I think Jerry would be happy to take care of you.

PM me off line if you want to complete the test

I've replaced the trans temp sensor so the problem is upstream.the lean codes are there because of the faulty MAF or the whole air box is moved up. Try to push down the back part of the intake box by the windshield. If you can move the back part up and down easily then that is your problem. The O2 sensors are relocated behind the second cats so they will not throw a code.

I kind of figured you would have replaced that. I don't think the lean codes would be triggered on both banks by one faulty MAF sensor though. It could very well be the MAF seals, but even relocated secondary O2's can and will throw efficiency codes from time to time, especially in colder ambient temps.

Thanks everyone for the quick feedback and going easy on the new guy. It is great having a couple of people who have worked on the car here on the forum . I am going to try clearing the codes to see what comes back up. Is there a book to help explain the codes (i.e. does bentley have a code explaination in it?)

When I replaced the windshield do you think that could have messed around with the MAF sensor?

The car is going in to have the fuel tank looked at so I doubt they will pull any codes or even need them. Audi called me today and asked me to take it into a dealer to have it inspected. Since I will be out of town for the week I thought I should get it in sooner rather than later. I will let you guys know how that goes.

@DHall1 I will PM you about the logs and software update. Sounds exciting.

"Pat, how many times are you going to check the air pressure in that tire?"

Until it reads the same psi for 5 straight checks. How many friggin pom poms do we need on this POS?

"Until we make it fast enough to lift off the skirt from Linda Vaughn."

She may have had 1,000 too many trips down the 1/4 mile. I'll take circa 1972 where the Mopar Missle picture was taken.
