R8 Developed flatspot in 3rd Gear

    Hi all

just a quick note to let you know of a recent problem. My R8 (4.2) was serviced about 4 weeks ago and as part of the service the engine mgmt software was upgraded to a new version. After the service the car had developed a flat spot in 3rd gear. I would accelerate and the car would take off and almost immediately there was a very significant flat spot before the car accelerated again.

This was not just a little lag - this was a real flat spot.

It would only happen occasionally. After I experienced this about 4 times I took it back to AUDI and they discovered that it only happened in 3rd gear and only if you accelerate from 2800rpm. After 2 weeks of testing they first tried to tell me it was normal. Obviously it wasn't. After finally testing against another R8 that did not have the software upgrade AUDI rolled back the software and the problem was gone.

I will try and find the version of the software upgrade and post it here.

Ask the question if your car is about to get serviced and get the software upgrade.

Sounds like it's probably one of two things.

    1. AFR too low.

    OR

    2. AFR too high, causing knock and the ECU is then pulling the timing.

The mapping is different in each gear due to the different load on the engine.
