Why would Audi take a step backwards with their S cars. They started a trend going back to N/A engines and all their direct competition M, and AMG have followed suit in the respective segment. Unless there is some big shake-up somewhere, don't expect turbos in anything but maybe the RS6. Of course Audi will keep the 2 liter TFSI and the TDI. As long as the Merc has the venerable 6.3 V8 and BMW has the 4.0 V8, keep dreamin, sorry guys.

Simple - they need an answer for 335i, which is the direct competitor for S4.

Sounds strange if Audi come "back" to a V6 (even TT) from a V8. Sounds like a step back (athough the power and more important the chip potential will be great...).

Just my 2 cents but I am getting used to my V8 N/A and my 8200rpm redline. Getting back to a TT doesn't sound appelling to me yet. Anyway I am not in a hurry at all to switch my beast so by the time new RS models come out I will be ready

A V6 is only a step backwards to people who dont understand the difference between a V6 and a V8 engine, who think as the number is bigger it means better.

A high revving V6 especially when twin turboed will be more fun to drive and feel sportier and this is what made the RS4 such a change to Audis, the high revving nature, it just feels faster and more fun to drive.
It feels like your on the edge more and this is often a reason why BMW drivers have problems with Audis (in the past atleast) due to their bland feel compared to the sporty drive of the 3 series.

I'm still not sure if this is realistic though for the S5 and S4 to have two different engine setups. Its not something that any other manufacturers do at the moment, not in this sector anyway such as 3 series and C class.

But it definately sounds like a good idea and would make the cars two completely different beasts, which is what Audi seem to want to do, make the S5 seem more exotic.

I bet S4 will be introduced in LA Auto Show in Nov. 14. There will be more than a dozen premiers in LA Auto show.

Let me be more specific :

I meant a step back in the sense of the pure "engine appeal" or "engine grandeur/nobility". I fully agree that a nice V6TT can be great and no doubt Audi knows how to make it...

Simply my current feeling is more on the N/A engine of my RS4 that's all and for the time being N/A is what I want especially this 4.2 FSI which is fabulous.

Now in few years I will be ready and happy to switch it to the RS5 with a V6TT 450 hp

Guys, recent chats between a few well informed members of the group and the belief is that the S4 and RS4 will have both v6TT units in differing states of tune. The RS5 will continue with the N/A engine but with Valve-Lift technology and an even great rev limit, possibly producing as much as 450~470hp.

P.S. Engine size might increase to reach this desired output. Personally I'm hoping for another Bi-turbo unit with either 6 or 8 cylinder, but I would accept a N/A unit with the right output.
Search and you will find the truth.

I can't project myself driving another brand in the future based on what the rumours are regarding the next RSs.

I know that you and most other people know the advantages and dissadvanatges of a V8 and V6 engine, sorry didnt mean any disrespect. But engine appeal and grandeur are not something your typical Audi buyer is after with the usual understated nature of the buyer.
If they wanted grandeur they'd buy BMW or a 6.0 AMG job.

I think the V6TT much more suits Audis smaller S4 or future RS4 and the V10s should be in the R/S6 & S8 and maybe a V10 R8 for the future. That would really make sense to create a difference in the lineup and save the V8 for A6's and R/S5.

    Just my opinion there

The question of S4/S5 engine is indeed very interesting.
In my opinion, S4 and S5 will have different engine setup to differ one model from another.
S5 is positioned between S4 and S6, not as S4 or S6 coupe!
That's why it's logical to have for example:
    1) 3.0L V6 TT with app. 360 hp (it will be enough to beat 335xi or C350 4MATIC)
    2) 4.2L V8 with app. 380 hp (after valve-lift upgrade)

Just to point out that I wouldn't mind the N/A V8 as long as they could offer it at the V6TT price - competitive to 335xi.

my two cents is that they dumped V6 TT engines back in 2002 and have no reason to go backwards...and, yes, I'm American and biased, but a V8 has a soul, and a marketing advantage, that V6s, turbos or not, cannot match. The S4 has had a 340hp V8 since 2004 - why, in 2008, would they revert to a TT V6 to match the 335i that offers a TT V6 with only 300hp? (actual 335i horsepower dynos aside)

you've got a point. i'd accept an updated VL 4.2 NA V8, but it'd have to make 380 or more horses. the 4.2 V8 has been around for too long as is. complaints? none really but it needs better fuel economy and a bit of weight loss and yes, more torque. whether this comes with VL (about all they can do without making the update too expensive) or with a thoroughly new V8 like the long-rumored and never seen 4.5 liter V8 is irrelevant. but i am darn sure it'll be the same engine that will go into the S4 and S5.
    Past- A4, TT, S4

    Present- R8 V10
