ATF, checking and changing
Required special tools
Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System VAS 5051 with adapter cable VAS 5051/1 (or VAG 1551 Scan Tool with adapter cable VAG 1551/3)
Drip tray VAG 1306
Filling device VAG 1924

ATF level, checking and topping up
Test conditions
Transmission must not be in "emergency running" mode
Vehicle must be on level ground
Selector lever in "P", engine running at idle.
A/C and heater switched off.
At the beginning of the test, the ATF temperature must not be higher than 30C (86F). If necessary let transmission cool down.
Note:
Only add ATF (color: colorless to yellow). Do not use any additives.
ATF is available as replacement part: Part No. G 052 162 A2, 1.0 L container
ATF level changes with ATF temperature. An ATF level check when temperature is too low leads to overfilling. An ATF level check at too high an ATF temperature leads to underfilling.
Overfilling and underfilling adversely affects the function of the transmission.
The ATF temperature can be read with the Vehicle Diagnostic, Test and Information System or at the display of the VAG 1551 Scan Tool.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
37-75
Read ATF temperature
- Connect Vehicle Diagnostic, Test and Information System VAS 5051 with adapter cable VAS 5051/1. Or connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool with adapter cable VAG 1551/3 to Data Link Connector (DLC) under knee bar under steering wheel.
Repair Manual, Automatic Transmission 01L All Wheel Drive On Board Diagnostic (OBD), Repair Group 01
- Start engine.

Select function XX
Indicated on display:
- Enter "08" for function "Reading measuring value block" and confirm input by pressing "Q" button.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Read measuring value block Q
Enter display group number XXX
Indicated on display:
- Enter "004" for display group "004" and confirm input by pressing "Q"-button.
Read measuring value block 4

Indicated on display
- Read ATF temperature in display field 1.
ATF level, checking and correcting
Note The ATF level is checked at the ATF control plug.
The ATF level is correct when a little ATF runs out at a temperature between 30 (86F) and 45 C (113 F) 1)caused by the raising of the level when warm.
1) For tropical climates 50C (122F)
- Hang up container for ATF filling device VAG 1924 as high as possible on vehicle.
- Raise vehicle.
- Place drip tray VAG 1306 under transmission.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
37-77
WARNING!
Wear protective glasses.
- If ATF-temperature reaches 30C (86F) , remove ATF-plug -2- and if necessary drain excess ATF.
If ATF drains from the ATF-plug before the ATF has reached 40C (104F) the ATF level is OK.
Note:
At the latest at 45C (113F)1) the ATF plug must be closed again Page 37-78 .
1) For tropical climates 50C (122F)
If no ATF drains up to 40C (104F), add ATF:
- Insert filling hook of filling device VAG 1924 into hole for ATF plug, item 2-.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
37-78
- Add ATF with VAG 1924 -arrow- until ATF flows from plug opening.
- Always replace gasket for ATF plug.
- Tighten ATF plug to 80 Nm (59 ft lb).
- Press button at V.A.G 1551 Scan Tool.
- Enter "06" for function "End output" and confirm entry by pressing "Q" button.

why? The dealers are saying no. The fluid is permanent. I'm having trouble with this policy. Can the fluid REALLY be permanent or is this just what they recommend to get through the warranty period?
Someone please shed some light on this subject for me. Am I too old school in this new age of synthetic lubricants and fluids? :vhmmm: :looking: :vhmmm: :looking:

I thought someone had mentioned brake down of the transmission fluid due to excessive heat with modifications/Tracking the car!
Nothing is truely permanent, but I do not recall seeing 'changing tranmission fluid' as part of any of the services listed in the service manual. I'll have to look again.
It is a sealed system, no dip stick like American auto transmissions.
