as most of us know the new S4 will be getting a sc motor producting about 350 hp and over 300 ft/lbs of torque and good fuel economy. why would audi keep the heavier gas guzzling V8 in the S5? not much case if the answer is "to keep it uplevel with a V8 and make ~25 more ft/lbs of torque".

i would be really surprised if audi didn't quietly change the engine over for the 2010 S5..................or maybe even make it a 2009.5 change over...

Mostly for cost reasons. I don't believe it would be cost wise to dump the V8 right now, but as you say it might make sense in the future.

There will be two versions of the engine one with ± 290 hp used in the new Q5, facelifted A6 (265 hp 3.2 V6 FSI replacement) and Q7 (280 hp VR6 replacement) and in the next A8 to replace the outgoing 265 hp V6 3.2 FSI engine.
And there will be a 355 hp version of it that go's in to the new S4 and almost for sure will replace the 354 hp V8 engine of the S5 soon.
The S5 will be a much better performing car with this lighther V6 engine and QTV diff.
The new RS4 and RS5 will get most likely still upgraded (RS4/R8) V8 engines.
Because i think the V6 SC engine will top out at ± 400 hp.
Based on the 500/550 hp MTM S5/RS4 4.2 V8 FSI supercharger engine's.
If MTM strand on a solid 500 hp @ 7000rpm and 550 hp @ 8250rpm with a 4.2 litre V8 SC engine, an 3.0 V6 with max 7800rpm will not bring much more then a solid 400 hp IMHO.

It's clear with the development of the new DSG7sp being capable of coping wih 9000rpm means it's been designed for a very special engine.

Something tells me you know a little bit more of that "special engine".

Sound like the upgraded 4.2 V8 FSI high Rev engine.
With 460 hp by 8550rpm and a rpm limit @ 8900rpm.
And 471 Nm @ 5650rpm of torque.

Now that would be an exciting and very special engine indeed. :D

See, its hard to please all customers. If the S5 still has the lovely V8 next year, I will buy it. If they switch to turbocharged V6s I won't bother. :vgrumpy:

460HP from 4.2L = 109.5 HP/L

Sounds fantastic but im not sure if its feasible when they could easily plug in a turbo or two.

Personally i'd much prefer a NA high rev monster.

Edit: RS5...M3....997S MkII....Cayman S....this is driving me mad, when will we find out about this damn car:)
