Audi R8 Cabrio
Fast-lane prestige is naturally given to Audi’s upcoming first real sports car, the mid-engine R8, presented at the Paris auto show. Though technically based on the Lamborghini Gallardo, the R8 comes with permanent all-wheel drive and has a longer wheelbase, offering more cabin space.
Instead of the Lambo’s V-10, the R8 will use a brand-new 4.2-liter FSI V-8 with 430 bhp at the beginning of production, at a price of around $100,000. The 2-seat coupe will hit the U.S. in the summer of 2007 while an open-top, Porsche Carrera-GT-like model will follow in 2008. For 2009, Audi will install a version of the Gallardo’s V-10, punched to 5.2 liters and delivering 500 bhp. — MP
